UK Government Launches Radical Plan to Speed Up Removal of Unsafe Cladding

The UK Government has announced a new Remediation Acceleration Plan to address the ongoing crisis of unsafe cladding in buildings across England. The plan introduces tough targets and measures to hold freeholders and developers accountable, aiming to make homes safe more quickly and put an end to the uncertainty for thousands of affected residents.

Key highlights include:

New Deadlines for Remediation:

- - All high-rise buildings (18m+) with unsafe cladding funded by the government will be fixed by 2029.
  - By 2029, all medium-rise buildings (11m+) must either be fixed, have a completion date set, or face severe penalties for landlords who fail to act.

Enhanced Enforcement: Local councils, fire and rescue services, and the Building Safety Regulator will receive increased funding and resources to tackle hundreds of cases per year.

Faster Developer Action:

- Developers responsible for unsafe buildings will work to double the speed of remediation.
- By summer 2027, work will have started on all buildings developers are remediating.

Addressing a Long-Standing Issue

Seven years after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, which claimed 72 lives, many residents still live in unsafe buildings. While 95% of buildings with the same cladding as Grenfell have been remediated, only 30% of all identified unsafe buildings in England have been fixed. Thousands more may still be at risk.

The government’s plan follows the recent Grenfell Tower Inquiry report, which highlighted systemic failures in building safety. This plan represents a significant step in fulfilling the government’s promise to accelerate remediation efforts and deliver meaningful change.

The Remediation Acceleration Plan focuses on:

Fixing Unsafe Buildings Faster: Clear deadlines and tougher penalties will ensure high-risk buildings are made safe.
Identifying All Risky Buildings: Advanced data and a comprehensive building register will identify unsafe cladding more effectively.
Supporting Residents: Measures will shield residents from financial burdens and improve their experience during the remediation process.

Next Steps

The government has committed to reviewing 80% of medium-rise (11m+) buildings by 2025, with over 95% expected to be reviewed by late 2025. A new social housing remediation strategy will also be introduced in Spring 2025, accelerating work on unsafe social housing.

This plan also includes a review of building regulations to improve fire safety standards and provide greater clarity for the construction industry.
