How does an Automatic Opening Vents (AOV) System work?

An Automative Opening Vent system is installed in a building as part of the overall fire prevention strategy.  The system is operated by a control panel which has been configured to respond to various triggers (these may be either manual or automatic), such as a fire alarm.  When triggered, the system will then open window actuators, vents, roof lights and windows to create ventilation. This reduces smoke and heat which facilitates evacuation and fire-fighting and also reduces material damage to the building.

Why is smoke so dangerous?

When fire breaks out, smoke is one of the biggest threats to occupants and effective fire fighting.  It can take as little as 5 breaths for consciousness to be lost. Smoke not only greatly impedes vision but can also damage a building and its contents.

The law states that both commercial and mutli-occupancy buildings must always maintain clear escape routes which are free from smoke.  This is to enable ease of evacuation but also to allow access by emergency services/fire fighters and aid their operational efficiency.

What triggers can be configured to work with an AOV system?

A variety of inputs can be configured to work with an AOV system, such as fire alarms, key/button Fireman override switches, emergency break glass, smoke sensors.

What Building Regulations do I need to consider?

Building Regulations Approved Document B states that AOVs which extract smoke are a requirement by law for buildings with a communal stairwell.  Ideally your system also needs to be BS EN12101 certified and CE marked.  Our team can advise you on what the legal requirements are for your property and we will always provide systems which are legally compliant.

Do I need a Single or Multizone AOV System?

This all depends on the type of building in question.  Defensor will advise you on the most appropriate approach.

Single Zone AOVs are commonly used for stairwells, lobbies and corridors.  They are configured to operate one or two ventilation options, such as window actuators or roof lights.

Multizone AOVs operate across multiple areas.  They are used for larger systems which require multiple zones to trigger separately. 

How often does my system need to be serviced?

The law states that your ventilation system needs to be regularly inspected to ensure operational efficiency.  If you are the owner, management company or Responsible Person for your premises, it is your responsibility to facilitate this legal requirement.  Defensor recommends that your system is checked at least bi-annually.
