Automatic Opening Vents.

Often to be found within the roof of stairwells and corridors, Automatic Opening Vents (AOV’s) allow the external ventilation of smoke and heat which has developed as a result of fire inside the building.

What are Automatic Opening Vents?

flame

An Automative Opening Vent system is installed in a building as part of the overall fire prevention strategy. The system is operated by a control panel which has been configured to respond to various triggers (these may be either manual or automatic), such as a fire alarm.  When triggered, the system will then open window actuators, vents, roof lights and windows to create ventilation. This reduces smoke and heat which facilitates evacuation and fire-fighting and also reduces material damage to the building.

The law states that both commercial and mutli-occupancy buildings must always maintain clear escape routes which are free from smoke.  This is to enable ease of evacuation but also to allow access by emergency services/fire fighters and aid their operational efficiency.

At Defensor we design, develop and supply bespoke AOV control panels which fully integrate within the building.  This approach ensures that the system is fully monitored by the Fire Alarm System.  It also means that cabling between the control equipment and vents is minimised.  This has the benefit of reducing both the cost and time involved in implementing this type of system.

Defensor developed and engineered this system solution in response to client needs for a retrospectively fitted controller of existing vents.  We have successfully delivered this efficient solution working with many of the familiar brand named vents and controls.

AOV

Advanced Smoke Ventilation for Safe Evacuation.

The primary function of an Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) system is to enhance evacuation during a fire by efficiently clearing smoke from lobbies, stairwells, and corridors. This ‘smart’ smoke control ensures building occupants have a clear and safe route to the nearest exit.

By improving visibility and minimizing smoke and hazardous gases, rapid smoke ventilation also helps emergency services locate and address the fire quickly and effectively.

The Benefits of an AOV System.

Using Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs) significantly reduces the amount of smoke and heat trapped within a building during a fire, providing crucial benefits for occupants. By lowering the concentration of harmful smoke, AOVs help ensure that residents or workers are less likely to inhale toxic fumes during evacuation, enhancing their safety.

The presence of an AOV improves visibility in smoke-filled environments, as it allows smoke and heat to rise and escape, leaving lower levels of the building clearer than they would be without proper ventilation.

When fire breaks out, smoke is one of the biggest threats to occupants and effective fire fighting.  It can take as little as 5 breaths for consciousness to be lost. Smoke not only greatly impedes vision but can also damage a building and its contents.

The law states that both commercial and mutli-occupancy buildings must always maintain clear escape routes which are free from smoke.  This is to enable ease of evacuation but also to allow access by emergency services/fire fighters and aid their operational efficiency.

Defensor are an EasiVent approved supplier which gives us access to the very latest range of actuators and control equipment.

A variety of inputs can be configured to work with an AOV system, such as fire alarms, key/button Fireman override switches, emergency break glass, smoke sensors.

Building Regulations Approved Document B states that AOVs which extract smoke are a requirement by law for buildings with a communal stairwell.  Ideally your system also needs to be BS EN12101 certified and CE marked.  Our team can advise you on what the legal requirements are for your property and we will always provide systems which are legally compliant.

This all depends on the type of building in question.  Defensor will advise you on the most appropriate approach.

Single Zone AOVs are commonly used for stairwells, lobbies and corridors.  They are configured to operate one or two ventilation options, such as window actuators or roof lights.

Multizone AOVs operate across multiple areas.  They are used for larger systems which require multiple zones to trigger separately.

The law states that your ventilation system needs to be regularly inspected to ensure operational efficiency.  If you are the owner, management company or Responsible Person for your premises, it is your responsibility to facilitate this legal requirement.  Defensor recommends that your system is checked at least bi-annually.
